This morning I ventured onto the computer and everything seemed happy. Just before shutting down I started up incredimail and the bloody thing crashed. Not only did it crash - it took the whole bloody computer with it! So bad it was we had to restore the thing to factory settings! Nice to have a purge in a way, but it's brought it's own problems. Although Best Beloved's "User" side of the 'puter is happy, and has kept all her 'backed up settings' Every time I set my side up, with the settings and backed up files etc - as soon as I log out and log in again it forgets bloody everything and I have to start again! It's driving me bonkers. Any ideas? It OUGHT to be a clean sheet with perfect behaviour - but nothing surprises me in "Windows Land".

Set up another user, and use that?
Restore, back to a couple of days ago?
Superantispyware?

I hate incredimail, I have spent countless hours removing it from random people's computers in Hadleigh who have asked me for computer assistance.
Every time I go back to help them again somehow it is back on there.
I have no idea why your settings are not being kept, when it is things like internet settings (i.e. it doesnt remember your login details even when you ask it you can fix that by removing cookies) but you dont mean internet settings do you?
What sort of settings are you talking about exactly?

Never had a problem with it until a recent set of updates they did. AAAAAnnnnyyyyywwaayyy (to coin a phrase). Having a fresh computer now like virgin snow we have set up the user profiles. On the Primary Profile it hangs onto all the folders and (for instance) the Firefox favourites and bookmarks re-installed via Mozzbackup. It's only when you do the same to the Second Administrator Profile that that profile will then not save any of the settings when you log off. So you start Firefox and it will be as if it's starting it from scratch again etc. Spoke to a brilliant I.T bloke yesterday to confirm my problems as terminal - spoke to you like a human being with a good level of intelligence. Made the mistake of calling again just now to ask about this problem and got some patronising Twat who spoke to you as if you were five Isn't human variety wonderful!

some patronising Twat who spoke to you as if you were five STOP PRESS: Twat is welcome on Stub Crouch -- Official. That's a relief. I sympathise with your M$ problem, Pat, but probably can't help. Have you tried seeing what happens with a vanilla grunt user's account? Which mutation of Windoze are you using trying to use?

Windows Austin Seven. Each time you log on to the secondary profile (i.e: Mine) it starts as if from scratch - and a message pops up saying "You have been logged on to a Temporary Profile". How? I set it up! It ought to be permanent!

Oh yes. I've been Googling all round for a while - but a lot of the artcles I came across have been aimed at corporate situations. Found something just now that looks like it might solve the problem. I'm working on that now. Either that or I'm striking lucky in what I'm doing this time! Moaning indeed! Scrub your keyboard hand with Lifebuoy! It was the disaster that preceded it that was my problem. (Actually I was fairly cool, calm and relaxed about it - just ask Mrs Patrick!)

Found it - Sorted. Buried within the Windows Help files is an article about fixing a "Corrupt" user profile - I might have seen it before, but didn't consider the profile as corrupt. I also didn't think creating yet another user file would make any difference because having created umpteen new ones (well two or three) since last night didn't seem to make much difference.
Hey ho.

Treat it as a free Microsoft enforced training exercise.
It makes the whole experience seem a little less like a waste of time.

Ooooh! I've had plenty of those! Must get the old laptop running again so I can have a play around with Linux on it.

Ooooh! I've had plenty of those! Must get the old laptop running again so I can have a play around with Linux on it. You can dual-boot (or multi-boot) practically any IBM-architecture PC these days. It wasn't always so easy. Try Ubuntu. (Or SUSE, if you're feeling a bit more frisky.) You know it makes sense. All the best tools work on Linux as well.

Nobody but me been here since before 19:00. Nobody in Chat. Not much has happened all week.
This board is dying. So is PhotoFit. Something must be done.

Oh don't start with the 'Board is dying' nonsense. To every thing there is a season. Sometimes people are busy or thinking of other things, sometimes they're not. It's waves against a beach. It is impossible for this board to die until the last 2 members die. I was over on Photofit tonight too. I loved Bets' London and art gallery ones. In the winter people take family photos, Christmas and parties, photos of people. It's in the summer people get out and about and seeing things and thinking all photographically. Also, I've often thought that Photofit is a very underpromoted board. I used to have a link to it in my sig on Bitbot, but since I flounced from there, nowhere now. So chin up Weyland. Let's not be at home to negativity.

And PhotoFit is almost at a dead stop. Don't shoot the messenger.

But sometimes boards just go into snooze mode for a while and then get going again when people have more time, or whatever. Complaining is not a look that suits you. If you want change, don't complain, act!! AVANTI!!

If you want change, don't complain, act!! AVANTI!! I thought I had just acted. And I've been trying to keep it active every day for weeks. Can't do it much longer. But it is going Weyland. People are looking in and looking out. (I'm talkinga bout the Stub. If you are talking about Photofit ignore the above and apply the below.) Well, I think Photofit is an underused utility. Loads of boards I'm on photographers post their shots and people say 'wow', and I think these are like-minded people. So what we need is a bit of a promotional strategy where we ask Photofit fans to add it to their sig line, or post it in the links section, or whatever of every board they're on to see if we can't boost the numbers. I'd offer to arrange it, but I'm totally busy at the moment. Told you I had new boss who had me working v. hard (which I love, but it does leave me less time to dick around on message boards.) Plus QOTT has moved into her flat, and I'm up there every 2nd or 3rd day now. Busy busy busy.
