Has it got anything to do with Juvenal's rara avis in terris, nigroque simillima cygno? Castigat ridendo mores.

Yes - but in the sixth satire he did it woth unprecendented viciousness.
The point about his black swan was that there's no such thing. So there are no good women.
So (as I haven't seen the film) I still don't know if there's a connection.

No, I hadn't - it's beautiful! Actually Juvenal only says they're very rare.

No, I hadn't - it's beautiful! Actually Juvenal only says they're very rare. I think it's the emblem of South Australia. (Don't get too near to any swan. They're big, they're strong, and they can get stroppy. I still have the bruises.)

Has anyone ever eaten swan? Euphemism? Not at all. Just wondering what it tasted like.

Riot, I've read that it tastes slightly of fish. Euwww. If that wouldn't turn you off. I've also read that some swans have been killed and eaten by Eastern Europeans. Naturally, it was in the Daily Mail, but The Guardian also mentioned it - obviously in not such strong terms - so I give below a link to that newspaper. www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2003/jul/04/markoliver

I think that story was discredited later, Everso. It wasn't much of one to begin with.
A lot of cygnets are killed by discarded fishing tackle.
