A coach with 23 children on board has crashed into a house in Ilminster in Somerset. Sociologically speaking, this clip is interesting by something I've noticed as a worrying trend in the South West of England - the lack of local accents! Except the fireman. Though I expect he probably has to commute from Cardiff in order to be able to afford a house there, Nice to see a girl called "Sadie" too! There aren't enough Sadies IMO.

I bow to your superior knowledge of Ilminster but they all sounded like genuine SW accents to me.
What should they have been like? What's your accent btw?

Well, the family had one - but the children from the bus were decidedly posh (how else would one be called Sadie (Did I mention that I love that name and that it's a crime that it's been given to dogs over the years??!)
Me? I'm posh apparently.

well south west england has some posh people ya know and they are allowed to speak posh. How posh are you? Are you an imported accent to your area? Have you got a non-local accent? Bad Patrick!

There was an edition of Gardener's Question Time from Bridgewater a little while back - and not one questioner sounded "local" They all sounded like they just stopped off to dust off their second home in the Quantocks for the weekend. It's an invasion I tell you - Not how I remembered the place when on holiday in the 1970's. They don't speak anything other than Islingtonese in Padstow these days - and Whitstable in Kent's full of Hoxtonites!

Merely bewailing the loss of local culture from our towns and cities, that's all. I would have joined in, but I've discovered that I'm immune from accents.

They weren't posh! They all had Somerset accents - admittedly not as strong as they would have had, say, 50 years ago, but I could certainly hear country-fied accents, Patrick. All accents have become less strong since the advent of t.v., cinema and, of course, people moving around the country more. Years ago most working class people hardly moved from their villages in a lifetime so it's no wonder accents were stronger. Of course the most prevalent accent at the moment is the "Nah-ah-mean-innit" one that has developed over the last 20 years. Bleuuughhh

I was on the bus pulling out onto the main road from the bus station last year, all of about 50 seconds, and in that time between them - the two teenagers behind me - I counted 26 "Likes".
Those schoolgirls were posh.

My ears tend to pick up on the liberal use of "Like" or "Know what I mean", when that happens I just start counting to see how many they do in, say five minutes. It ought to be an Olympic sport!

"Innit" makes my teeth grate And also the irritating habit which started in Australia of making every sentence into a question by going up at the end?
