Barak Obama is visiting his Irish roots. There seems to be a fashion for anyone with even a Irish hair to be a proud wanting to kiss a gobbed on blarney stone. My hubby has declared a Irish person in his family, i have some somewhere.

My hubby has declared a Irish person in his family, i have some somewhere. ALL American presidents claim Irish roots. Even O'Bama. There are millions of "Irish" votes to be had. My mother's father came from County Sligo, so I'm at least a quarter Irish, not to say Fenian. That's why Riot hates me so much, God bless her. I've visited Sligo town three times: 1991: Delightful little town, with two cathedrals, lots of great pubs and live music. Great bookshops. 2000: Getting to resemble many a town in England, with fast-food joints everywhere and spoilt pubs. Still some good ones, though, and still a lot of live music. Not so many bookshops. 2007: Barely recognisable. More like Las Vegas. Didn't stay long. It made me very sad.

My great great grandfather came from Ireland but I don't know which bit. All I've been told is that when he had found fortune (and relative fame) he employed someone to research his Irish family history and was told "not to take it any further".

As Mohammed Ali once said, "Aint it bad enough being black?"

Touch of the old transportation-to-Botany-Bay-for-stealing-a-carrot I dare say. Empaaaaaaaaah days. I'm so proud.

Oh , maybe. But (somewhat to my suprise) I've just found a Wiki entry on him. He wasn't born in Ireland at all, and I'm not sure his father was, though he had an Irish surname. He married a Scots woman, so it can't all be bad.

My gt.gt.gt.grandfather on my father's side came from Cork and my gt.gt.grandfather on my mother's side came from Newry. A rough calculation makes me 3/32nds Irish. I understand you only need 1/1,000,000th of Irish blood to like Jameson's. Mr. E. is 1/64th French and 1/8th Russian Jewish. We 'English' people are an excellent mix.

BTW, shouldn't that be "mongrels" rather than "mongals" (unless, of course, you happen to have Mongolian ancestry)

My grandfather was Irish , from County Rosscommon , came over to work on the railways , lost an eye in the process ....... Apparently Rosscommon is a barren rocky place with not much going for it . Also apparently , someone in the know , would be able to tell whether my origin is catholic or protestant from my surname .
