Friggin' slow computers. I'm over my daughter's today, looking after the twins, and she has two computers. One's a laptop and whenever I use that I end up grinding my teeth to a pulp. It has about one thumblength's memory, a veritable Alzheimer of a computer. The other one is a desktop which, as soon as I start using it, decides to download McAfee antivirus updates like ithey're going out of fashion, and after about a quarter of an hour of me shaking my fist at it because each page change takes god knows how long, it then politely tells me that all's well. A complete arse of a computer. That's it. Rant over. Anybody else feel the same way about slow computers. They really should be soundly thrashed.

Brilliant! We're on a roll at the moment, bacon probably, ever since gutting the 'pute of everything and putting the important bits on another hard drive. So it's nearly working at the speed it was at when new - just the tired and grinding hard drive not running quite as fast as it did five years ago. I used Mcafee briefly ages back, but AVG is the only one for me now - though even that nearly ground to a halt before the hard disk was gutted. When I dropped the thing on it's lid helped too - you wouldn't believe the stuff that had evaded the hoover that came out of the keyboard.

Come on people . . it's not that bad. Hands up who remembers dial-up . .?? I suspect that you don't ever get a "faster connection". I think you just upgrade to a connection that can cope with the amount of information/type of 'netware that's out there each time. My 5MB Broadband seems as fast as the 2MB broadband was "at the beginning" and that - "at the beginning" was as fast as the BT dial up I originally had! - once again - at the beginning! If that makes any sense! It's like someone runs a 1600cc car for ten years - always serviced and carefully looked after, but you can't help the deterioration of some components over time - or that the engine just might not be as efficient once those ten years are up. So Mr Someone buys a brand new 1600 car and it feels like a 2000cc car, cos the engine is more efficient and far more advanced than his original one. Computers are like that - they just get clogged up. and worn out.

Come on people . . it's not that bad. Hands up who remembers dial-up . .?? Yes. As a result, all makers of slow computers should be beaten to death

But the thing is, what IS it that annoys us so much? I mean, the moment my computer starts chugging (not that often thank goodness) I start to get this kind of tickling feeling in the pit of my stomach and my hands start to automatically curl into claws. The jaw starts working and the expletives start rolling, and I just can't help myself. I can be patience itself with my grandchildren, with Mr. E. (usually), even with the broken cork in a bottle of wine (although I tend to buy screw tops nowadays), but a slow computer?

Oh and one more thing. I'm down to Romford again today. The A12 is at it's best worst on Fridays with all the hopeless Essex drivers (me excluded naturally). I'll join you all later on this evening in Rob's chat room if I survive.
Toodle-pip!

Safe journey! It's the not knowing, everso. It's the blank expression the computer gives you, not a hint of when an answer might arrive. It's the knowledge that the computer could reply straight away but isn't going to. Why? because it can't be bothered, because it's stupid, because it just wants to annoy you. Updates on progress would be only polite but all you get is rumblings and lies. Oh the lies.
