While not a Chris Evans supporter, I must come down on his side. I think his comment was completely UN-racist. I don't even think the question of race came into it. The woman was in a badly lit studio. He might have made the same comment to anybody. Ridiculous. I really don't think he'd have said the same thing about anybody - but I don't think, either, that there was a racist intent there. But what about Clarkson? Can he have been unaware of Evans's gaffe?

I do recall that story Jean. I don't see the difference between that and racism. It's exactly the same in my book.
As it happens I adore redheads.

How did this perverse bias against redheads develop in any case? I don't understood it at all, and I'm not even sure I was aware of it until Catherine Tate made it funny. And I believe she IS a redhead. (And a fine figure of a woman. But that's for another thread.)

It was before Catherine Tate.
And I think it only really applies to boys.
Jean - White is the default colour here, you're right. It's only relatively recently that black women have been able to get make up for their skin tone; and I think "Flesh" plasters are still pink.
Still, I saw that C Evans thing and I didn't really notice anything wrong. He didn't mean it to mean anything.
I don't think he is that bad, really. He used to really nice on GLR; then he got famous and turned nasty, then he went back. He seems ok now.
It's different with Clarkson: he has form. He is right that you can't have comedy without offence: but his offence is always in the same direction (whereas Zappa would make jokes about anybody - even rock guitarists and modern composers).

Neither Zappa nor Evans nor Clarkson -- especially not Clarkson -- are comedians. That's the fluffin problem. If Stewart Lee had worked these jokes they'd be fluffin hilarious.

Oh my god, I've danced opposite so many men who do that! It's true. Things went off the rails for good and all dance-wise the day Gene Vincent died. And even a dyed-in-the-wool Mod knows that. You really can't beat a good jive. I've taught my grandchildren to jive.

I do. He couldn't see the woman. It was a dimly lit studio. He'd have said the same to a white person, imo. He was just commenting on the fact that he couldn't see her in a dimly lit studio. Do you honestly think he'd have risked his career (for it would most probably have come to that) by making "jokes" about not being able to see her because of her skin colour? I didn't see the programme, btw - I'm only going by what I've read in your link. I think too many people are reading what they want to read into this.

I do. He couldn't see the woman. It was a dimly lit studio. He'd have said the same to a white person, imo. I'm absolutely convinced that he wouldn't have. Because however dark the surroundings, nobody ever does. She's an astronomer, and they were talking about the fact that night sky was cloudy and so they couldn't anything out there. He risked his career anyway by making a joke that could be taken that way - not a very bright thing to do. But people seem to have concluded (as I would) that the comment was ill-advised, but not motivated by racism. What about Clarkson, though? He can't be defended in the same way!

But he's writing for the Mail, isn't he?
Zappa wasn't a comedian; but he could be very funny. He could be funny in instrumental pieces and passages as well.
S Lee is dead good though, you're right there Trubble.

But he's writing for the Mail, isn't he? No he's not - it's the Mail that's inviting us to see his comment as offensive, complete with quote from black war veteran. They wouldn't do that if he was one of theirs. I think he writes for the Sunday Times, but you can't see what he writes there unless you pay, of course.

She's an astronomer, and they were talking about the fact that night sky was cloudy and so they couldn't anything out there. So are you saying the studio wasn't dimly lit? I thought it was dimly lit to enable them to see a screen or something. As I said, I didn't see the programme so don't really have much of a grasp. I suppose it seems a daft remark to make, in any case, because a dimly lit studio has nothing to do with a cloudy sky. But let's get right down to it. Even if he was commenting on the fact that her skin was dark and therefore she was more difficult to see in a dimly lit studio, why was that racist? Her skin is dark and I would imagine she's proud of that. Should she be made to feel ashamed of her dark skin by white people being insulted on her behalf? Just another way of looking at it, Jean. Ah now. Clarkson is another matter. He's a prize prick and seems to go out of his way to (ahem) "test the boundaries" - much like other prize pricks who call themselves comedians.
