[Constable Country? Mmm, lovely. You can stand in the same place where John Constable painted The Haywain and it doesn't look much different There is (or there used to be!) a board on The Mill which allows you to compare Willy Lotts' house with Constable's painting. Even he took liberties with the dimensions to achieve the desired effect.

I think we should have a Meet there, next time I'm on the way to Harwich (late September). I live 10 miles from Flatford / Mistley so I could definitely make a meet anywhere near there . Flatford is lovely.

Flatford is lovely. Nothing I'd like better, Rob. Let's do it. You choose the venue. September 27. I have to be at the ferry terminal in Harwich by about 22:00. Are you watching, Ev?

Are you doing anything exciting in London, Jean? A few exhibitions - the medieval reliquaries, maybe Tracey Emin - and I've got a ticket for A Woman Killed with Kindness at the National. I only realised after we'd booked the train tickets that there was Victoria at the Proms the night before - but I'm consoling myself with the thought that the Albert Hall isn't the best place for it.

Why has the swan got nothing to swim in?
And is that a monster lurking in the River Stour?

Why has the swan got nothing to swim in? It's Essex. Nothing would surprise me. In Essex.

I have a lot going on in my life at the moment, what with new grandaughter, an uncle in hospital and my aunt to take care of. If I can, I will come.

We used to go bird watching at Misley. Easy for OH because it doesn't involve much walking!
We may be in Suffolk in October, so you will will both be too early. Or indeed too late for my art course next week, which may well involve a trip to Mistley. Though I'd prefer to go somewhere a little less public...I can do without curious passers by peering at my feeble efforts.

It's like the village of the damned. Be honest, Sparra — you'd do anything to avoid us. Be sure to visit Leiston. It has a wonderful olde worlde cinema, and it's within walking distance of Sizewell-B nuclear power station, which I built with my bare hands. There's a nice campsite near there called Cakes'n'Ale.

Weyland, if I take the train I won't be going anywhere I'm not taken to by the tutor.
But the forecast isn't looking too good and I may end up driving after all.
I used to know people who worked at Sizewell B. If I ever meet up with them I shall explain about how it was built single handedly by a personal chum. They will not be surprised that I am acquainted with such a feller.

You're an example to one and all. Now we're just waiting for Rob to lay in a course and order the Chateau Le Pin Pomerol 1999 and the Caviare & JalapeƱo crisps.

That's nice.

Nice?
Sounds like a case of damning with faint praise.
Everso, what do I need to pack for a trip to Essex? Please bear in mind that everything I take needs to go into my 30L rucksack.

Well, obviously, a bottle of tanning lotion (something similar in colour to American Tan would be perfect) and, of course, a pair of white stilettoes. A pot of lip gloss and a lip liner pencil are required, and, if you have time, a visit to the hairdressers beforehand for those essential hair extensions.
Frankly, Housey, I don't see you as an Essex girl. The rucksack's out for a kick-off. Sorry.
