How long do you give a book before ditching it part way through and starting something new?

I give it a couple of chapters. Frankly, if it doesn't interest me by then, it's not going to do the trick.
Life's too short to read uninteresting books.
Ooo, I'm reading "Disclosure" by Michael Crichton at the moment. I've seen the film with Michael Douglas and Demi Moore (?) on t.v., but the book is much better.
What are you reading?

I might have to give the Downton Abbey printed version a try. I watched this week's TV episode, and I'm afraid I have to say I wasn't impressed, which surprised me. Couldn't detect any plot-line. Seems to be dozens of little eventlets with not much synergy. And adverts just get worse and worse as time goes by. It reminded me why I hardly ever watch ITV. Sorry to be such a grump. ~ Off-Topic Department:I'm reading Artifact by Gregory Benford, which turns out to be a sort of second-rate Indiana Jones / SF adventure yarn. Not very good, but I'll probably finish it today, on the ferry. £1 at the 50-50 shop. The Full Monty (hoho), which is a biography of Field Marshal Montgomery of Alamein by Nigel Hamilton. £2 at the Hospice shop. This is really good. Much better than I was expecting. Part One of Two. (So it's not really the Full one.)

I gave up on the Blue Book by A L Kennedy. It was highly rated but was sending me to sleep. Perhaps I should have persevered, but there are many other good books to read.
My current novel is a Robert Goddard - not great literature but a heck of a lot more gripping than the Blue Book.

Oh, I've read all Robert Goddard's books! I love them. You can never tell how they're going to end.
I never read romantic novels. I used to, but somehow they don't interest me now. Must be my age, although I still mourn the fact that Georgette Heyer's dead.
Weyland, I'm sorry Downton Abbey's not doing it for you. I'm enjoying it, but I have to say that it's not as good as the first series, IMO. The multitude of adverts spoils it for a kick-off, although I suppose you have to accept the fact that it's ITV. Also, I'm worried that Matthew Crawley is going to get a leg blown off or something.

Everso, I can remember you recommending Robert Goddard previously; that's why I chose this one. It's an audio book - so was the one I abandoned. You can't dip into a box of CDs in the same way you can with a paper book and I was determined not to waste another £1.20 on something I never finish. It is quite gripping.
I decided to watch Downton for the first time this season. It was probably the adverts that did it for me; I wandered off to do something and didn't bother returning when it all started up again.

How long do you give a book before ditching it part way through and starting something new? 100 pages tops, if it hasn't got me interested by then, it's obviously sub-standard crap (probably written by a femminist or a commie). AH
