Following some dispute about the timing of the four seasons in Rob's chatroom on Friday night, Mouse has posted this on the Orchard:
march 20th spring begins..verna exqinox sept 22 autum begins oct 25th summer officially ends
I disagree.
I put it to you:
December, January, February = Winter March, April, May = Spring June, July, August = Summer September, October, November = Autumn.
Anyone care to disagree?

Yet this totally random link: www.classbrain.com/artaskcb/publish/article_15.shtmlsuggests a different approach. The season of Winter begins on December 21st (The Winter Solstice) and ends on March 20th (The Vernal Equinox). This means that part of December, all of January and February, and part of March is the Winter season.
The season of Spring begins on March 20th (The Vernal Equinox) and ends on June 21st (The Summer Solstice). This means that part of March, all of April and May, and part of June is the Spring season.
The season of Summer begins on June 21st (The Summer Solstice) and ends on September 23rd (The Autumnal Equinox). This means that part of June, all of July and August, and part of September is the Summer season.
The season of Autumn begins on September 23rd (The Autumnal Equinox) and ends on December 21st (The Winter Solstice). This means that part of September, all of October and November, and part of December is the Autumn season.

swl is the nearest so far however Winter = Samhain = November. Spring = Imbolg = February Summer = Beltaine = May Autumn = Lughnasadh = August Solstices and Equinoxes occur MID season. Any other version of events is American propaganda. Here is a random link to the dates of this year's solstices: www.almanac.com/astronomy/seasons/index.php

Riot is correct.
Does anyone know if the Met Office have predicted a good summer? We usually have a week in Salcombe in June and every year without fail we seem to pick a decent week weather-wise.
The luck of the eversos.

I don't see what their relevance is to the concept of 'seasons'. Are JUST? JUST!! These are seasons based on light. They are unchanged over thousands of years. Light is the true change in seasons. Your temperatures are all bouncing around all over the place and when Global Warming rules the planet, and the temperatures have changed, and you all complain about seasons turning into one big long summinter, then you will come crawling back to the celtic wisdom that will still be ticking along nicely without you, thank you very much. Now get ready for St Brigid's Day, the first day of Spring. Feb 1st.

St Brigid? What's she all about?
She founded a large number of convents, the most famous being in Kildare (A.D.490). Most of the miracles attributed to her were concerned with the relief of poverty or illness. She is reputed to have personally ministered to lepers and to have cured many. Legend draws for us vivid pictures of the kind of woman she was: her lavish generosity, tireless energy and irresistible charm, equally at home in the fields tending sheep or bringing in the harvest. She is found milking cows, making butter and cheese, and tubs of home-brewed ale.
I'm not keen Trubs, not keen at all.
Women of this kind often believe themselves to be 'saints' . . and in her case Il Papa has obviously agreed. I believe she is just another vatican stereotype designed to oppress kickass women everywhere.

Sounds quite the multitasker really!
Of course, if we just go with the flow, or, go with the light regarding the seasons (which I approve) then it may annoy quite a few religious types (of which I also approve). Accordingly though, they might take the same attitude to work - which could mean working from 4am to 11pm in the Summer and about 9am to 2 or 3 pm in the Winter. So better keep quiet on that front.

Just a thought; Perhaps we've got out of sorts through the messing about with the calendar over the centuries? If it really starts to go awol - the only thing to do would be to revert back to letting Mother Nature decide what's what?

Today was beautiful. Big blue skies, warmth!, light bright day, the smell of blossom in the air. I watched a friend swimming in the sea. I wish I'd brought a camera with me, the photo would have looked like mid-summer. Admittedly he was saying things like 'wow, brr, ohmygod' but only when in the sea and I was wearing my scarf and coat but the coat was worn jauntily open and the day stayed joyful until about 5pm.
Now, dont tell me that's mid winter.

Now, dont tell me that's mid winter. Well it was bloody freezing here. The morning vomit was frozen to the ground all round Paddy's market. And even the Geordies were putting on a jumper. So I don't believe a word of this. If your friend was swimming in the sea today it was only because you threw her in and tried to drown her.

I saw a patch of blue sky today - then the fog rollled in - serve me right for leaving the bathroom window open I suppose.
