Today I decided to buy something on line; not something I often do but I can't find it anywhere else.
The company purports to operate from England but the personal details form asked me for my home city and state. Then it demanded my mobile phone number - I happen to have one, but what if I didn't? Then they added "shipping to the UK."
Is someone telling porkies?

Amazon.co.uk, for example, ships a lot of stuff from other places, often the Channel Islands. Your stuff might well come from Hongkong, say. Do they mention Customs Duty? Usually that's waived if the goods are not expensive, but it pays to be aware. I know Royal Mail charges the customer £8 fee to collect any duty decided by HMRC, on top of the duty. (Yesterday I had to pay them £1.22 to get a (bulky) letter from London understamped by 22p.) If you don't mind saying, which company is it?

I bought something from Cuddy's in Norn Ireland recently. I ordered it on the Saturday and it arrived on the Tuesday. Brilliant. Plus it was £7.50 cheaper that elsewhere.

The company purports to operate from England but the personal details form asked me for my home city and state...Then they added "shipping to the UK." They may be using a US-inspired template; companies I know only operate in the UK seem to do this. And shipping seems to have become the default term for sending, though I agree the addition of to the UK is suspicious.

I'm a bit suspicious about the sizing, too: there is a choice of five sizes and the UK size 14 is the largest. They must cater for very delicate bodies. Either that or they have got the sizing completely wrong and I'll end up with a garment that fits a baby elephant.

No wonder the High Street is dying! Hell, no. Come to Chelmsford. We have more shops than you can shake a stick at. Thirty years ago the town was half the size it is now as far as shops are concerned.

The parcel arrived, shipped from Singapore. The garment bears all sorts of credentials re the organic natural fibres it is made from but nothing to say where it was made or whether the labour was properly paid. Still, it fits so I don't have to send it back.

Even so-called "designer" gear.

I've found a tiny label to say it was made in China. I'm a bit annoyed by this company, which waxes quite poetic over the environmental superiority of its "natural" fabrics (organic bamboo and cotton) but makes no mention of fair trade. In fact, as it is raining and I'm nursing a cold, I may send them an e-mail. What else is there to do on a wet day?

Sorry to hear you have a cold - I hope you have plenty of the necessary paracetemol etc.? Hot lemon and honey always makes me feel better. And whisky, of course. Companies that wax lyrical about 'natural', 'organic', etc. always have me reaching for my imaginary gun (Alpha's influence there, I'm afraid ). I'm getting so cynical in my old middle age, I tend not to take much notice of any claims made by companies.

..*rushes to erase mention of organic book keeping from new website* Can you put your hand on your heart and guarantee that no children or furry animals are hurt in your processes? If so, you really need to put it in.
