Good for her. When I was 16, I was FAR too busy to fight social sevices and public opinion, and then to sail around the world single handed. I had to fight my parents to be allowed to stay out after 10pm, at my boyfriend's house, and then cycle home SOLO at about 10.30. It was a 5 minute cycle, downhill all the way. And it was a very tough battle. I took strength from the fact that I was fighting not just for myself, but for my sisters' rights too. Still, sailing is also nice.

Imagine the criticism the parents would have received if her trip had resulted in tragedy? So I say good on the parents for allowing her to do this despite the obvious dangers and worry.
Take note please cotton wool brigade.

There are lots of dangerous things she could have done, which would have resulted in no criticism at all for the parents. (I was going to say cycling: but that's nothing like as dangerous in Holland as it is here.) I can't say more dangerous, as I don't think there have been enough solo round the world sailors to get reliable enough statistics for comparison.
I would have been bricking it when she was away; but I start bricking it when someone's five minutes late so I'm nowt to go by.

I just think it's a worthless way of wasting a year and a day. She's achieved nothing that's amazing these days. Can't even see anything to make it worthy of reporting, except possibly to her family and friends.
On the positive side, Laura Dekker is a nice name.

If she enjoyed it, surely that's enough. You could say that everything you do it a waste of time, really.

If all she did was "enjoy" it, she would have been better staying at school, mixing with friends and learning about life. The voyage must have required a huge amount of stamina and skill. At times she must have felt scared and lonely.

Oh, yes. But enjoying something isn't enjoying every moment. I used to love playing drums, but I hated hanging about beforehand and afterwards, and piling everything into the mini van, and trying to sort out the blisters on my hands (blisters on blisters, there were), etc; but it was all a part of it, and I would not have given anything up.
Oops. I think I misunderstood you. Sorry.

I was going to write that the girl did something that she will remember for the rest of her life - what an achievement! But actually, if she'd been my daughter I'd have locked her in a cupboard.

16? She should be shagging and boozing and trying drugs like any normal person. I mistrust those who do all this 'around the world alone' stuff at a young age. Strange, strange people.

We don't all live in the Gorbals, love! ;D (you make a fair and valid point though, well behaved, properly adjusted teenagers are to be mistrusted and viewed with suspicion) AH
