Almost finished downloading this series, I remember enjoying it when I were a lad and all that. Hopefully it will hold up to my nostalgic memories of it.
Also downloading all those "River Cottage" thingies with Hugh Farly Pigfarmer Barnyard or whatever he is called.

AH To coin a "Young Persons" phrase; I have "so" gone off Hugh Firmly Wishingwell lately. When he's talking off script, he's fine - when he's talking to a script the uppy and downy town of his voice drives me mad. The iPhone App's quite good though.

Funny Richard Wilson never mentions OWIL.
Other Funny; James Bolam has always been very grumpy about The Likely Lads, because (as I remember) he had trouble getting work again for quite a while afterwards. Odd really though, as come the seventies he was barely off our screens - what with "Whatever Happened to....", "Only When I Laugh" and "When the Boat Comes In" etc. You'd think he would have buried the Likely Lads hatchet long ago.
A bit like, many an Alec Guinness Retrospective rarely mentions the excellent Thames TV production of Monsignor Quixote.

Endlessly frustrating that Bolam has always declined invitations to reunite the Likely Lads in the 21st Century. Rodney Bewes has always been up for it. It would be fascinating.

Likely Lads is crap. So is Only When I Laugh. Sorry. They make me feel as if I am being suffocated. So does HR Pufnstuff.
(Sorry was quite good).

It was too much of its time. It would have to be less sexist (a remake) and that just wouldn't be the same. It's like the Sweeney. It's a relic of a less enlightened age.

Brilliant at the time though. Especially if, like me, you knew all the places, flats, pubs, etc. And lived in the same town as Ian La Frenais -- Whitley Bay. Used to see him around, including in The Ship (which is The Fat Ox, I think). And it sums up me and my mate, except that he had the Ferris middle-class genes much worse. He eventually fell out with all his mates, including me. And his Thelma is a good match. If it's on, I watch it. Can't help it. Thelma: She must have quite a hold on Terry. Bob: Probably at this very moment. Thelma: Maybe we should invite Chris and Terry to badminton club.

I thought Rodney Bewes was BRILLIANT in the Likely Lads! Only does the odd panto now, and half the audience doesn't know who he is.
