Not exactly the most comprehensive quiz - but ten questions from the Politics Show based on a report by the "Centre For Cities" Research Institute, out tomorrow into the economic strengths and weaknesses of Britain's big cities. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/politics_show/7849790.stmCentre For Cities SiteI tend to find Research institutes like this just look at statistics and never really "get out there" to find out the real picture. We'll have to see. To give away one of the questions, having lived in Hastings, yes, I know it has it's been very run down for a long time - but in the past ten years it's seen a boom - that's evident - I find it very hard to believe that it has the lowest wages in the UK.

I only got 2 out of 10. I got right that Dundee was the place with the most rapidly shrinking population; and anyone who has been to Dundee will know why. And I got right that Edinburgh was the place with the best qualified people. The rest . . all wrong.

I wish I could refute what RG says about Dundee, I really do.

I got four right.
I got the Job Seekers one (but I think I knew that anyway from something I read a while back)
I got the shrinking population one (I'm sure I read that too)
I got the growth in employment one (a lucky guess)
and I got the advanced qualifications one (bound to be Edinburgh innit?)

Well, it's out, and as I suspected there are statistics there that just don't make sense. The old chestnut about how you define "deprivation" for one thing (I only looked at the pictures and graphs and city table lists - so they probably explain their version of it somewhere). Suffice to say you can test a number of "Cities" til you're blue in the face but I still don't think you can tar them with any sort of brush unless you really get in there, live there and find out what's what? How's it go? "There are Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics!" Should open the pdf copy of the report - If you're bored senseless and desperate to read absolutely anthing!
