Ladies, I'm asking nicely .. . but what is it about being 'British' that makes you proud which is significantly different to your being 'English'? Seriously, what, for you two (who are proud to be 'British') is the difference between English and British? Hmmm. I feel English. I was born in England and, to me, it's the best place in the world. The British thing is for occasions like, say, the Olympics, when the whole of the UK takes part, or if we go to war (like the Falklands) . If Scotland finally decides to become independent then I will just be English and I'll support England at the Olympics. It's not that big a deal to me. If enough people in Scotland want to be independent then I'm sure that'll be the best thing for everyone. We'll still be close neighbours and hopefully there will be the same to-ing and fro-ing across the border that there's always been.

Wharf's wrong with being proud to be British? Because it's always "Worn on the sleeve" it's never Genuine. Most people would slag the place off at the first opportunity. Until there's some big occasion then all of a sudden everyone is "Proud to be British". i have always been proud to be Britishand the Olympic games as not made any difference

Am I just being harsh or should people NOT fall off the apparatus at this level? And if they are falling off, maybe they should be doing easier cartwheels instead of showy off ones that they do a little badly? hm? I don't think a gold medal should be given to people just because they fall off things less often. If falling was a sport, I would have entered. Silver medal, natch, Ev always gets gold.

I'm really not watching any of it (yet), but I do like gymnastics. I like it when they go up on the rings and trapeze things. That's amazing. Are they doing that yet?
Bit nasty about that wee Chinese swimmer. She's so fast they're saying she's on drugs, even 'though she's tested clear. Seems a bit racist . . .

A beautiful russian blonde has just performed an amazing warrior-like floor routine and I was just about to tell you how proud I am to be a soviet, comrades, when she broke a fall with her face. Poor woman. She was so magnificent too. On her face though, not even an arm like her comrade.

Rings yesterday. But singles are still to come, I think. I don't thinks it's racism, Riot, come on, now tsk. I think it's sexism - she seems to have swum the last 50 metres faster than men do and that's upset a few people.

Americans get gold - and bloody well-deserved.
I am still a little in pain from watching jennifer Pinches straddle the beam from a 7 ft drop. But otherwise, good show.

I think of Scotland as separate from England, so I suppose proud to be English comes first. If the Scottish majority votes to stay in the Union, which I very much doubt now, I'll be content, although I'll always feel English first. I suppose, to a certain extent, it's a "meh" from me as far as the English position goes, but for Scotland I hope you get your independence because I know how passionate many of you feel about it.

I'll say, although it's been a while (I hardly like to say it really). I think the last time was in Tindal Street, Chelmsford, when a young man had to help me up. ;D Sometimes, when I can't get off to sleep at night, I go through all my falls - you know, when and where it happened, who picked me up, that sort of thing.

There was a young German guy that did quite badly yesterday. I'm more than half in love with him, and he must be more than half as old as me.

To be fair, though, the Chinese have a pretty bad track record on doping in the past. No wonder people get suspicious. I don't believe it's anything to do with her race. I remember the East Europeans back in the day - their women athletes were always regarded with suspicion (the beards probably did it) and with good reason, as was later discovered.

We watched the swimming earlier (well I watched and Mr. E. did the crossword in the paper). I was almost in tears when the young South African guy was given his gold medal. Ahh bless him. His mum and dad in the audience were crying with happiness and they interviewed his dad shortly afterwards. "Ah em so prahd of heem" he said.
What a strange accent they have in Sith Ahfrica.
