After a break of a few years, you'll be pleased to hear that the Horton in Ribblesdale Show was back this year! So! in keeping with such fantastic news - where better to share the results but the Message Board that brought them to you FIRST! (Well, after the Paper had published them of course)....
Dismal weather on Friday did not bode well for the annual horticultural and agricultural show at Horton-in-Ribblesdale, due to take place the following day.
However, the conditions on Saturday were in total contrast with sunshine and remarkably clear skies.
The field, lent for the occasion by the Jackson family, had dried out underfoot and visitors were able to view the sheep classes and marvellous array of vintage vehicles and tractors without the need for wellingtons.
Top spot in the vintage tractor section went to first time exhibitor 14-year-old Ryan Hewitt, of Stainforth, with his 1978 David Brown 885 and show treasurer Peter Shackleton won the vintage car section with his immaculate Austin Seven.
Entries in sheep classes remained fairly consistent and the supreme champion, by the narrowest of margins was a Blue-Faced Leicester shown by James Caton who received the Marmaduke White Cup for the overall sheep champion and the Frankland Challenge Cup for the champion Blue-Faced Leicester. The reserve champion was an aged Texel ram from the flock of Ryan Middleton.
Stephen Raine, of Stainforth, nigh on swept the board in the Swaledale sheep section. His small but elite flock won him four pieces of silverware for best male, best female, champion Swaledale and the Ron Metcalfe Trophy for the best tup lamb. The latter award was presented for the first time this year by the friends of the late Ron Metcalfe who spent the first four years of his life in nearby Helwith Bridge and became one of the most noted Swaledale breeders of his time, winning every prestigious award on the circuit The Dalesbred section, though lacking in numbers, made up for it in quality Richard Brown of West Burton, made the long journey from home to take the trophy for the champion Dalesbred, the trophy for the best male in the section and the best fleeced sheep. Neil Jackson on home territory won trophies for the best female and the best group.
The indoor classes, and in particular the horticultural and confectionery classes, were extremely well supported and there was plenty for the visitors.
Young Alfred Dickinson had double success when he won cups for the best exhibit in the handicraft section with his underwater collage and the best exhibit in the flower section with his miniature garden. Ryan Maudsley had the neatest handwriting which won him the Thomas Metcalfe Memorial Trophy.
Victoria Johnson had most points in the confectionery section for children aged 12 to 16 years and Abbey White received a trophy for gaining most points in the 11 years and under category. Mum Leslie Graham won the Sargison cup for the best soda bread.
Accomplished needlewoman and show secretary Paula Swainson had the best needlework with an applique cushion and the best handicraft with a silk painting The trophies were presented by gala princess Emma Dunkley Other trophy winners were: Golden Lion Cup (champion Texel) - R Middleton; Joan Barker Plate (champion Zwartble) - T.Sutcliffe; Waterston Cup (best five Mule gimmer lambs) - SH Sutcliffe; rosette for best Mule gimmer lamb - G White; Dawson Cup (best fleeced sheep in Swaledale section) D.Wood; Peter Wood Trophy (best local Swaledale) and Foredale Tankard (best pair of local Swaledale gimmer lambs) - B.Thomas; Cup for best Masham lamb - C Middleton; Horton Tradesmans Cup (best sheep shown by an exhibitor under 16) - Ruby Thomas; Mrs Mason Cup (best confectionery) - J.Campbell; most points in the confectionery section - H.Armstrong’ Barrow Cup (most points in the flower section) - H Huddleston; Horton Landscape Cup (best photograph taken by a child under 16) - Zoe Thomas; most points in the horticultural section - J Lambert; best photograph - K.Chenery.
