I thought of this as I've been making cups of tea today. Wouldn't it be useful? You could have very hard sugar in a little bag which you put in your tea, gave it a stir and the sweetness would just slowly wash off the instead of it just dissolving away. Then, you put the bag to one side to use again later.

Would it be useful? How? Surely you will need the same amount of sugar either way?
Sweeter sugar is what's needed, so you use less.

How would you know how long to put it in for?
If your tea (or coffee) was maintained at a constant temperature and the megahard sugar slowly lowered in, then you could give some kind of guide, but as soon as you start varying the temperature and swirling the sugar lump around, the times would vary dramatically.

I hear they're quite nice caramelised! Actually, sugar ants could be quite useful. Store them in a tin and when you need to sweeten a drink just squash the ant between your finger and thumb, letting the liquid sugar fall into the drink. eversosensible

I'm off to bed now, Pat. I'm up late because I fell into a coma after dinner and slept for almost 2 hours on the sofa. Damn red wine.
