"Children who are born in late summer or early autumn are often taller and stronger than peers born in spring and winter, a large study suggests.

The results from the Children of the 90s project - which involved 7,000 youngsters - says the reason may lie in their mothers' exposure to the sun.

The body makes Vitamin D, crucial for bone-building, from sunlight.

The Bristol University study suggests that this process may even occur in babies while still in the womb. "

A little story that my Grandmother told about my Mum - apparently in April of 1943 there was a bit of a heatwave, and they put all the babies outside in the sun/fresh air at some point after birth - in her words; "When thy brought them back in they looked like little lobsters!"

What they don't say what percentage of this contributes to the whole growing period - alongside natural genes etc.

Well, I was born in March, Mr. E. in April and our son in May - all winter in the womb. I'm 5'8", Mr. E. 6'2" and our son 6'3". In our cases, it has to be genes.

Nonsense. I was born in the height of Spring on April 25th and I'm six foot three and a bit. Not sure what the weather was like though in April 1967. I'll have to phone Mum.

I was also a freakish early talker. Mum said the doctor was astounded when he made a home visit (I was nine months) and greeted him with a 'Hello Dr Lamming' from my crib.
