In these times of crises - with energy costs rising - the Government could do one thing that really would help people and also boost small business;
Scrap VAT on "repairs"
Just think of it? OK, a lot of companies now no longer have call out charges, but a lot will charge just to "look" at an item to see what's wrong + the repair/labour/parts on top. If it was cheaper for us to mend things rather than replace them, on paper it would make a difference to the environment. I believe this has been suggested before - not only by environmental groups, but by the institutes and societies that oversee small business owners.
When it comes down to it though - there's no way the government would bite the hand that feeds it? Big Corporates like the Dixons group etc. Shame.

Just checked, and there has been a couple of petitions on this at the Downing Street site. Though it's not clear what the result was.
How did you guess that I've a couple of things needing mending!
