Jeremy Paxman on the Victorian, Sundays, BBC 1. Anyone watching? watch again: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00hvg67Despite it getting some negative reviews from the jealous critics who believe Paxman is unqualified to have an opinion on the Victorians, I love this programme. Paxman is so easy to listen to, unlike some of the experts that usually present this sort of educationment tv and so what if he's being a bit liberal with his theories? It's still an interesting conversation. Last week was the Victorians as seen through their paintings. I often ignore the type of paintings he was showing, boring and dull to me. I was inspired by his love of them to call into the National Gallery on my way to the train the other day and have a quick wander around. Next Sunday's episode is the Victorians seen through their homes. Loving it.

I saw some of it when I popped back in the kitchen whilst still milking -and hung around too long watching . I agree , interesting and a great presenter ( and he flirted with my second cousin on University Challenge ! )

I did watch The Victorians, but I was lying on the chaise and confess I did lose myself towards the end.

Apologies if Trimble is anyone's relation but I saw a glint in Paxman's eye. Is your relation still in the game or has the team been knocked out? The 'irish' lot were knocked out due to a lack of any decent questions on game consoles and pot noodles. Fix.

Started watching it on iPlayer but I see it's repeated on Sunday Morning anyway. The music is a bit intrusive and annoying which is a shame. We've been to the mill he visited, great place - a bit too clean though! We arrived late there and were allowed to wander around as we liked. The mill - he didn't say - is actually in Burnley, not Manchester.
It's a sad reflection of Britain today that we so carefully preserve these place where people "used" to do proper work. Won't be long before the whole place is one big theme park I reckon.

For those hard bitten Paxmanphiles - tonight looks like a good'un. There's a photo in the Radio Times for today with JP shovelling coal on a steam train!!!
That just seems soooooo un Jezzerlike.
Shovelling coal with a suit and tie on maybe - but this!
We really are seeing another side to him.
Oh! and what's the betting there'll be yet another shot of him at the tiller of a barge again!
Funny thing about news presenters and trains - Did anyone know that Nicholas Owen - Now of BBC News 24 but once of ITN and Channel 4 News is secretary of the Southern Electric Railgroup?

Don't moan about them preserving places. Everything changes. Mill life was probably not half the fun people pretend it is. Weren't people killed in the mills??
At least we have living history in those preservations. I can think of worse things than pituresque theme parks and I'd rather work in a mill in a heritage park than the real thing.
There's a good ''theme'' heritage park in Belfast, if my memory is working properly, with houses of contemporary workers preserved and you wouldn't want to live in those conditions, would ya?

No Moaning intended. I want his jacket - Please say that was a blue cord jacket - it looked like one. He's obviously into his blues just like me!
I wrote a brilliant poem about "Theme Park Britain" Can I bloody find it!?
They ought to introduce a few more smells to these places. I reckon (for instance) that they should let the custodians at the likes of Hampton Court Smoke pipes and cigars around the place to keep the atmosphere going. Or at least light the odd coal fire in the Winter. It's like going through the a charity furniture shop as they are now. No smell = No atmosphere.

Once more, I watched The Victorians but fell asleep halfway through. What I saw of it was pretty good though. Am I doomed to fall asleep in front of the t.v. for evermore now I'm approaching late middle age? What is late middle age btw?

I lurked ~
I saw this thread ~
I joined the board!
The Victorians is one of the best TV series I've seen in a while and Paxman puts it over very well. I haven't seen it confirmed anywhere but I suspect he may have been,in some part, inspired to make the series very finding out about his family's Victorian history in Who Do You Think You Are?

You beat me to it! I thought the very same thing today, thinking about it. It does say "Written and Presented By" on the end credits I notice - and the passion comes out for that. Rather than when one of these celebs just gets offered a job and disinterestedly wanders around limply reading someone else's words. Though I got the feeling that Oz and James enjoyed their recent Beer-fest too.

He did NOT like being questioned on Trimble, did he! Got all fidgety...over exaggerated face movements..he's covering something up.
