Online networking 'harms health' "People's health could be harmed by social networking sites because they reduce levels of face-to-face contact, an expert claims.
Dr Aric Sigman says websites such as Facebook set out to enrich social lives, but end up keeping people apart. "He also says that evidence suggests that a lack of face-to-face networking could alter the way genes work, upset immune responses, hormone levels, the function of arteries, and influence mental performance.
This, he claims, could increase the risk of health problems as serious as cancer, strokes, heart disease, and dementia."So! You have been warned! I wouldn't have thought dementia would come into it though - after all - there must be at least some level of stimulus in even interaction via a computer?

Face to face is so much more pleasurable. I like computer chatting a lot, as you might guess my my 10, 000 plus posts here, but with the exception of the Friday Night Chatroom, it does not give anywhere near the same stimulus as a normal chat. There are all sorts of lovely eyebrow flashings and huggings and hearing someone laugh etc that raise the spirits. The stimulus from chatterboard chatting is working the brain in different ways - like brain training for dummies - and it's so great when you want control over when you chat. And you can enjoy your own company while still being in contact with others, it has its plus points but just not as many as being with an actual person has. Well, depends on the others I suppose. Plus- if I spend too long chatting on the computer without chatting in real life I begin to think differently - I begin to think like a board conversation - which is really bad for face to face conversations. You get in trouble for saying things like lol instead of laughing. ;D Friday Nights in the Chatroom are different because the pace is so fast and it's immediate, I reckon you can get similar stimulation from that - I laugh out loud and feel as if I have been in a face to face conversation.

Me too. Can't make it tonight though.

What I HATE about face-to-face talking is that when you get bored, you can't just stop. You have to keep going. You can't just shut the laptop.
Also, it's full-on. Other kinds of chatting you can stop, put on some tunes, skin up, whatever and then return to the convo. Face-to-face if you need some 'me time' you have to make excuses to keep going to the toilet or whatever.
One of the reasons I still smoke socially is so that I can escape from face-to-face conversations and go and walk about a bit and have a fag.
Mind you, I hate the phone most of all. I reallly, really, really hate using the phone.
