How often should I defrost my freezer?
And is it safe to wrap things well- thus keeping them frozen-and return them to the freezer? I have a big old load of stuff I'd rather not chuck.

To be honest I don't do mine all that often but I just bung all the frozen stuff together in a box, I figure they'll keep each other cooler? My kitchens so cold though I don't think I need worry. ;D

We have an (over) twenty year old Zanussi box freezer (baby one) - in the five years we've been in this house I've defrosted it once. Most of it's life it's been like that.
The appliance of science indeed!

I'll keep an eye on them. If any hit the ground, I'll freeze 'em for Christmas

If meat does defrost, you can always cook it up and re-freeze it. I wouldn't do that with ice cream though

If meat does defrost, you can always cook it up and re-freeze it. I wouldn't do that with ice cream though 'Course, Vesta started something there - In the weeks after a mega defrost - and in my house I can just shove the fridge out in the back garden to do it, I do make an effort to switch it off overnight before the ice builds up - then you forget and the next thing you know it's creeping through the holes above the freezer compartment. So - with defrosting thoughts in mind I had a look and flicked that switch before things became too bad.

A couple of times someone (anon, naturally!) hasn't shut our freezer door properly, and the gap has iced up so we can't shut it again without defrosting. Not to worry, we just eat really well that day
