You need to show your passport to get into the pub?
I'm not entirely sure this is a good thing.

My Mum can remember when it was all fields round there - and she used to go to school on the same bus as Martin Jarvis!

Jack Sparrow was brought up in Croydon. The posh bit though.

Jack Sparrow was brought up in Croydon. The posh bit though. Ah! What the detractors call "South Croydon" by any chance? Joke amongst my family - in the vein of that that every town has; "Oh! You live in South Croydon" "No! Sanderstead actually!" ;D Whenever I called my Dad's Step-Mum - for years and regardless of all the number changes, she would always answer the phone "Hello! Sanderstead 6196" Thirty years ago Purley was supposed to be posh - After all Terry and June lived in Purley! Unfortunately an Aunt of mine can't wait to escape - the proud street of large 1960's semis has fallen prey to burglaries and they don't like going out at night if they can help it.

JUST my husband? Yes, he was brought up by relations in Croydon - my sense of direction is pretty poor but it was up a hill, and I have vivid memories of shopping in Croydon Safeway (or was it Waitrose) Christmas Eve morning many years ago. It was liek being trapped in a flock of gannets (not nice for a couple of chirpy sparrows).

Did I ever tell you that I went all the way to Elephant and Castle to see "The Great Escape" ? (Steve McQueen featured heavily in my life at that time - I'd got over Ray Davies) This was about 1966/67 when TGE had been re-released.
I can't believe I travelled home from the Elephant and Castle to Romford late at night on my own, and wasn't molested - I was only 16 or 17 at the time.
Things were different in the 60s.

I can remember having to go to Southbank Polytechnic (it must have been before your time!) for an inter-uni competition and nearly getting mugged in a subway on the way.
