For some odd reason we ended up watching Piers Morgan in Dubai last night (a repeat on ITV3).
If I was a billionaire Dubai would be the last place on earth I would want to even visit, let alone live. Sun, sea, sand, then just acre after acre of huge glass and steel opulence. Not a tree or a bird or a wild thing in sight.

I think the very essence of Dubai is just vulgar. Nouveaux Riche at it's very extreme. Created from monies leeched from innocent people by a cartel with a closely guarded monopoly. Now wonder it attracts the likes of Footballers, and other ne'er do wells.

I agree that Dubai looks horrible, really false and trashy.
However, clearly it is the new Ibiza. Initially the rich and fabulous will holiday there, but within a very short few years it will be catering to the package holiday crowd. And that's when the fun will start.
Dubai is being marketed as a resort, but people are making less of the fact that alcohol is not available except in the hotels, that it is a Muslim country with a Muslims system of laws, and that all those stag and hen parties in Union Jack boxer shorts are going to find themselves arrested.

The rich parts of the middle east are the new US: trying to build everything bigger and better than anyone before them.
Whenever I visit there I am just reminded of the busy parts of the US I have visited. Big cars, big stuff and lots of concrete.

Now wonder it attracts the likes of Footballers, and other ne'er do wells. This is pretty unfair. The countries there have a natural resource that the rest of the world want to pay a fortune for. The UAE is doing one of the best jobs of actually building an infrastructure and service industry to fall back on once the oil runs out.

What I don't get are all those artificial islands they're building, just inches above sea level. Haven't they heard of global warming or do they know something we don't?

If you had more money than sense I doubt you would care. I think it is simply that. They are building air conditioned beaches too as they get too hot to walk on (!)

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten that you travel round that part of the world a bit. Mind you Rob, you're not going to the be the person who NOTICES that there's no booze n shagging-on-the-beach, are you? I mean, you could probably be living in a 'dry' country for a month before you even realised that you couldn't get a drink there. We need to send out SWL to get a more typical British bloke feedback! I shall start a whip-round to send SWL to Dubai. Please send me the amount you wish to donate, plus your sort code and bank account details. Thanks.

news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/berkshire/7960905.stmNever let it be said that Stub Crouch is not at the cutting edge of topicality. There is a story on the BBC today (link above) concerning that woman that was caught fornicating on the beach of Dubai. She's lost custody of her children - turns out she was married to some Arab guy. "As she was found guilty of adultery it makes her an unfit mother and that was the basis for Ihab's case, adultery in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a criminal offence for a woman.
"To my knowledge no woman has won custody of her children in Dubai. 'Fess up then . . .any 'unfit mothers' in the house today?
