Thirty-eight countries are confirmed to participate in one of the two semi-finals of the contest, with the "Big Four" countries (France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom) and the host pre-qualified for the final.[2] In addition to those pre-qualified, the final will also include the ten selected countries from each semi-final, making a total of twenty-five participants.
A discussion on changes to the format of the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest had taken place at a EBU meeting in Athens, Greece in June 2008 where a proposal was made that could have resulted in the "Big Four" losing their automatic place in the final of the contest.[11] However, it was been confirmed that the "Big Four" countries would continue to automatically qualify for the final at the 2009 contest.[12]
How depressing. If we can't qualify on merit, we shouldn't be there.

If 'the big four' didn't have to pay for the whole thing, maybe they could do away with 'our' automatic entry.

Can't stand Eurovision. The quality of entries is usually embarrassingly dreadful and it's a foregone conclusion that we won't win. We're just not fashionable.

I haven't watched it since The Shadows were in it, I don't think - though I do remember seeinng Abba win it.
Maybe we just used to watch the last 10 minutes to see the winner. ;D

Eurovision is fascinating. All the Balkan states vote for each other, even though they keep ethnically cleansing each other. The songs are brilliant, especially if they come with costumes and dance routines. But the voting is best.
I can't wait for Eurovision . . maybe it's better if you're a bit stoned.
