The role of caretaker on Hamilton Island in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef attracted attention from all around the world and brought in applications from 34,000 hopefuls.
34-year-old Ben Southall, from Petersfield, Hants, has won through the tough selection process to claim the post.
No formal qualifications were required by Tourism Queensland but the candidates had to be willing to swim, snorkel, dive and sail.
The job advert required: “Excellent communication skills, good written and verbal English skills, an adventurous attitude, willingness to try new things, a passion for the outdoors and good swimming skills, and enthusiasm for snorkelling and/or diving.”
His position will require him to work for just 12 hours a month and his duties will include feeding some of the hundreds of species of fish that live around the island.
Oh - and he gets a salary equating to £70,000 pa!

There has to be more to it than that. Especially at that salary. I expect a rude awakening is just around th corner.
