Yes! happy Birthday dear Jean. Now, I did try to find the Latin for happy birthday but it sounded as if I was saying something about Nathalie's Dead Cat and I didn't feel it was appropriate on such a happy day. So in Irish instead then, lá breithe sona duit. Maith an cailín.

Many happy returns of the day, Jean. I trust you're being spoiled rotten on your special day.

Hope you had a nice day Jean. Sorry about all those multi-culturalists with their speech impediments cluttering up your birthday thread with their non-English nonsense!

Thank you, everyone - I was away singing Handel which was wonderful but meant I did not get any presents or cards at all on the day - a tasteful floral arrangement arrived just as I left the house, though, and we carried it around the country with us. I don't know how (or even if) the Romans wished each other Happy Birthday. The Poles wish you Sto lat, which I feel I am well on the way to!
