Tonight it will be fish n chips. I have been minding the grandchildren all day and am prostrate with exhaustion. I am in dire need of a large glass of wine.

Actually, by the time we got home the fish n chips was a bit luke warm and the batter came off the top of my fish and stuck to the paper as I took it out.
I feel sad this evening. We've more or less taken the decision not to drive to Edinburgh tomorrow and I now shan't be seeing my son until the New Year. Bugger it.

It might be a bit better, even if you left later in the day or something. I don't think it snowed overnight here (not sure about Edinburgh) and the sunrise this morning saw the sky turn the most vivid pink colour I've ever seen. I'm not sure what that means. Does it mean more snow or no snow? But it was as pink as Jordan's horsebox.

Tonight we will be eating mostly cottage pie with a difference. The potato topping is finely sliced on a mandolin slicer and included in it is a chunk of skin off my knucke. (see 'Grating' in The Kitchen)

Actually, I think I managed to fish the piece of skin out of the potato. At least I think I did, unless it was a piece of potato.

Tonight I've had a large home-made pasty, with sprouts and boiled potatoes, plus a portion of Jean's own crunchy pickled red cabbage. And very nice it all was too. (I think I detected just a hint of cloves, but not enough to start me ranting.)
The way the heating is in this house, in this weather the kitchen is colder than the fridge -- really -- unless I have the kitchen fire on all day and all night, and I just can't be bothered. So I'm eating here in the office until the Coalition gets the temperature sorted out. Bastards.

The way the heating is in this house, in this weather the kitchen is colder than the fridge -- really -- unless I have the kitchen fire on all day and all night, and I just can't be bothered. So I'm eating here in the office until the Coalition gets the temperature sorted out. Bastards. Wish I hadn't said that. It got much worse on Dec 27, when a pipe burst into my utility room and kitchen. The latter was 6" deep in water. It took until last Friday for the insurance company to spring into action and send an electrician to check for safety. Then today the damage control people came, ripped out the floor coverings, and installed two huge fans and a dehumidifier. What fun. Note that nobody has been to inspect the damage or check my story yet. I'd've expected that to be the first action. Annnneeeeewaaaaaay, I was out for lunch, with a member of the yoof* faction. The original plan was a square meal in a pleasant boozer, but it was peak peak lunchtime and the carpark was cram full, so we went to a McDonald's nearby. First time I've been in one since I can't remember when. Brand new branch, decorated and furnished in a 1960s Contemporary style throughout. It reminded me of those projectors they used to have in hip nightclubs showing moving coloured blobs of paint. Revolting. They'd run out of salt -- their words -- and then they had trouble finding any milk. The tea was fine, probably because it said "Full Bean Freshly Ground" on the cup. So that's what it's come to. Can't even rely on the McDonald's Corporation any more. Mankind might just as well give up now. __________ * I swear she said she was over 18.

You should have gone for a bag of chips and a can of coke. (Not "Fries and cola," by the way.)
That flooding must have been horrible, though.

Tonight: Fish, saute potatoes and broccoli with a side salad of lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, avocado and beetroot followed by chocolate pudding and cream. Yummy. The Good Life. I've only got Quiche Lorraine (bought), oven chips, green and red salad with German dressing, pickled beetroot, and (Jean's) pickled red cabbage. No pud. Cheshire and Finnish Thins. Lidl beer (you guessed . . . German). Tomorrow I'm going for a long walk in the Shropshire (blue-remembered) Hills, after I've had a haircut (it's like Kathy Kirby on speed at the moment, only white).

Homemade lentil soup and cheese on toast.
Time is tight and so is money - so is money right now, trust me!
This property game is an expensive malarkey. Although hopefully shortly I will be a two-house owner. Mortgaged and in debt to my back teeth of course . . .
