I liked Brain's Faggots. It's not something you go out of your way to admit though! Bit of mashed potato - lovely! Best Beloved thinks they're disgusting though so I haven't had them since 1992 probably. That and the fact that for some reason you feel a bit embarrassed buying them! Never heard of Brain's faggots, but faggots are staple fare a bit east of where I live -- Shrewsbury, Telford, Black Country. Only ever had them once, in an Ironbridge pub -- not bad. I'm told they can be vile if badly made. Brain's in Wales is beer. I think it's a Cardiff brewery. I'll be having sauerbraten with fried potatoes and cabbage today, plus a side salad with that delicious dressing they have in Germany. I love German food, and I'm typing this in my caravan within sight of the border. Might have an almond torte to follow, and a Jever pilsner, or a Diebels Alt. [Correction: East, dammit, EAST.][Correction: Fare, dammit, FARE.]

AHA! You do hear of them in the Everso household. Mr. E. loves my rissoles almost as much as my dumplings.

Fortunately I have my German sister-in-law so when we go down to Andover we occasionally get a treat. Germans do the best beer and, even if they don't do "fine dining" they do great food.

Yup! "Never forget your Brains!" As the hoardings along the Cowbridge Road would have it. My school used to serve something vaguely resembling meatballs for lunch. Then you could bet that for tea it would be burgers. In other words - they cooked the left over meatballs dry then flattened them.

Chicken salad twice on Friday/Saturday (Following a ham salad on Thursday) Gammon and Chips last night to make up for all that angelic goodness the last few days. Tonight? Cheap and cheerful; Undyed Smoked Haddock, chopped with couscous and peas. (Sometimes add sweetcorn too - a'la kedgeree)
Bugger - that's reminded me that we ain't got no peas! Sod it. Back in a minute.

Tonight it's a bit of a mystery tour. I'm boldly going where I've never been before (except for the Bratwurst and salad) . . .
Bratwurst Reibekuchen Linsen Mixed salad
Vanille traum
Basically meaty sausages, savoury potato & onion cakes, and green lentils, with side salad. Then a yoghurt-based vanilla-flavoured raspberry thingy. And some Paulaner Hefe beer.
Wish me luck.

Cor! Fab. I can hear your arteries screaming from here. You really can't beat the sort of meal that sticks to your insides. That's what we call "manfood".

Good luck i pressume you survived your encounter? Jawohl. It was wunderbar. Today I had Weinsauerkraut, mash, a pork chop, peas, gherkins, and a Paulaner pils. Luvverly. There was a young fellow named Perkin, Whose hobby was jerkin his gherkin. ...His mother said "Perkin, ...Stop jerkin that gherkin, A gherkin's for ferkin, not jerkin".

i LOVE pork. must get some pchops, aint had any for ages. There's no way of avoiding pork chops in Germany, Costy. Everywhere you go they're gathered in rowdy mobs, demanding to be cooked. It's hell, I tell you! And if you manage to get away, you can be sure that you'll be knobbled by a feral Wiener Schnitzel or a hunting pack of sausages. And for Gott's sake don't mention the SpƤtzle! I thought they'd hibernated, but I can hear them right now, circling the caravan. I just don't know how long I can hold out, though I do have a plentiful supply of excellent pils, Pretzels, and Sauerkraut.
