Oh, I now see McGooham is dead. But he ran to seed before then. This is how I like to remember him.

As a teenager I had a huge crush on Patrick McGoohan as The Prisoner. I like to remember him as he was, for he has sorely run to seed. Have you been to Portmeirion? Well worth a visit. I love it. It's a glorious hotchpotch of buildings alien to the area, vaguely Italianate or at least Mediterranean, plus other styles, partly constructed from bits and pieces of recycled architectural junk, and set on a lovely estuary in Snowdonia. Reminds me of an Escher drawing. And the staff speak Welsh among themselves, which adds a certain charm of other-worldliness imo. The Prisoner Giftshop is admirably tacky, and full of pics of the Danger Man himself. Portmeirion Escher -- Atrani, Amalfi Coast

If you saw this house you'd know that I LOVE junk. As I said, I think Portmeirion is a lovely place. It's full of stuff like your pic, though that is a particularly fine piece, and gone to a good home, where there is even a "ship" in the "harbour". That's the hotel on the left. Noel Coward wrote some stuff there. I'm almost tempted to drive up there this afternoon. Love the atmosphere.

I didn't mean it in a bad way... I may let you off then. The gates are in Birmingham of all places, which is a more serious problem:

Snowdonia's quite big - you may not have been all that near. The best way to go to Portmeirion is on the Ffestiniog railway. You can switch from the Conway Valley line at Blaenau Ffestiniog. Then you get off at Minfford and it's about a mile and a half's walk.

If you go, Costy, let me know and I'll see you there. It's only about 70 miles from here, and a very pleasant drive. Last time I was there it poured the whole time, but it was STILL a very enjoyable visit. Even somehow added to the unwordly atmosphere. It's a special place. Some good walks and views around there as well. May 2009. I had a beard then . . .

I'd had it since about 1990. Shaved it off for a good reason at the time, but I've forgotten her name the details now. Trouble with not having a beard -- as you know -- is that you have to have a shave on a regular basis, instead of just trimming it every month or so. I reckon men should have an automatic bristlepause when they're of a Certain Age. Optional, of course.

But we ladies have to wear make up and pluck our eyebrows and wax our legs and style our hair. It's only fair that you chaps have to shave.

As far as I'm concerned you ladies can forget all that palaver, and I'd still love youse. I mean it. I've had many a discussion about this kind of thing with women, and men, and it tends to be the women who insist on all that time-and-money-consuming faffing on, not the men. There are exceptions -- tending to be the kind of men who drive BMWs (cars) or Alfas, studied Aztec Business Administration at Cambridge, expect to make millions in the City and/or auditing companies like Enron, and don't even have the skill to make a BLT sandwich, never mind do their own Brazilian.
