I don't think i would like a secondhand ring that my mother in law had.Couldn't he gone to Ernest Jones and got her own. And i hope they have a private affair just because the country is broke and cannot afford a massive state one, like his dad and mum had,the security over that would be a nightmare, costing millions and perfect terroist targets.

Nothing bores me more than long drawn out ceremonies - but a lot of people love them and would feel cheated if they didn't have this to celebrate, I think.

Using his Mother's ring = Doomed to failure. I cannot believe that the BBC are covering this as if it were 1981 again and we were all misguided loyal citizens who love the Royal Family. It's 2010 and a lot of us cannot stand the sight of the chinless wonder and his woman and would rather have the monarchy finish when Lizzie (or Charles) snuffs it. The coverage is nauseating. I'm just waiting for Cameron to come out with some slimy Blairite comment about them being the "People's Newly Weds" or something similarly Banal and Pointless. I'm sure he will utilise the occasion to deflect from his own incompetence. One of the first things I thought when I heard the news is "as if life couldn't get any more depressing." It has now. Not to mention a great day for burying bad news.

Gercha you old grouch!
I think it's lovely news. As far as the engagement ring is concerned, I think it's gorgeous and I think it's a great gesture. As he said in the interview this evening on ITV1, his mother can't be there to share their happiness but by wearing her ring it sort of brings her closer. I think they both came across in the interview as sensible people. They've lived together for a number of years so hopefully their marriage will work. I'm in favour of the Royal Family (me and Alph both of us) but I know some of the board members aren't.
Alph, what say we meet up in London on their wedding day and wave our flags?
;D

It appears I spelt it wrong. It should have been Gertcha.
Mr. E's grandad apparently used to say "Gertcha you cowson" quite a bit.

I'm happy to have Royals - but more integrated Royals - Like Holland or Sweden - where they're happy to mix in with the rest of us. As I've said before - instead of this ridiculously jingoistic "Have to go into the services" rubbish - I look forward to the day when we hear the announcement that "Prince Clint has today passed his Estate Agency exam and will be taking up a position with Bairstow Eves in Islington".
I think I'll start a "Campaign for Real Royals".
They were talking about weddings in the time of Austerity - with the big question of where it's going to be held - My suggestion? Clapham Registry Office.
Basically, my main objection is to how it will be shoved down our throats for the next however long.

I'm happy to have Royals - but more integrated Royals - Like Holland or Sweden - where they're happy to mix in with the rest of us. But what's the point of that? Isn't mystery the whole fun of the Queen etc? Isn't elitism part of the USP? You've had that. Edward went into the theatrical arts and media. He ran the Royal Knockout. No one liked him. Except me. You'll get Edward. Booooo! Gerroff. You're spoiling the pompom circumstance. But it's better news than anything else on offer. I'd rather a royal wedding was boring me than anything else about the efffffing recessionbailouteurofeckoffivehadenough etc. PS I was all for the love match yesterday. It cheered me a little. Then I watched that interview thing they did. What a pair of drips. Good luck to them, I'll be interested in the dress, of course, cos I'm a girl, but I am already bored of their story.

I'm deleting the bit about you meeting Alph.

Sky news were and still are having orgasms about this wedding, as will the tabloids of course. They have found their 'new' Diana. She is I am told living her life like a 'candle in the wind' as we speak. Just don't buy the papers or watch TV for the next 12 months. I think we should all just board ourselves up in the chatroom until 2012.

I have the same 1st name as she does.
Gothboy has the same last name, and is a Billy too.
do you think if we got married on the same day tabloids would take our photos and give us free stuff?
We're thinking about it.
As to the giving of the mother's engagement ring, up here that is causing much amusement because of an old traditional comic song about such behaviour.
Bonnie Wee Jeannie McColl Early 1900s
Chorus: A fine wee lass, a bonnie wee lass, Is bonnie wee Jeannie McColl; I gave her my mother's engagement ring And a bonnie wee tartan shawl. I met her at a waddin' In the Co-operative Hall I wis the best man And she was the belle of the ball.
The very first nicht I met her, She was awfy, awfy shy, The rain cam' pourin' doon, But she was happy, so was I. We ran like mad for shelter, An' we landed up a stair, The rain cam' poorin' oot o' ma breeks, But och I didna care: For she's Chorus
2. Noo I've wad my Jeannie, An' bairnies we have three, Two dochters and a braw wee lad, That sits upon my knee. They're richt wee holy terrors, An' they're never still for lang, But they sit an' listen every nicht, While I sing to them this sang: Oh it's Chorus
Commentators are wryly asking if Wills also gave Kate a tartan shawl.

Mrs YI is a Kate too. They get everywhere these days. The future King Billy (eek!) looks like a young John Nettles . . .

Alph, what say we meet up in London on their wedding day and wave our flags? ;D Lady...you got a date! ;D I'm deleting the bit about you meeting Alph. Shouldn't you be queueing up for your free cheese hand-outs from your new EU overlords or something, instead of interfearing with young love? AH
