news.ninemsn.com.au/national/8196002/man-ignores-police-to-save-joeyPersonally, for me, it made me so grateful to read of someone being so humane. Yes, he had young kids so I am guessing some people might say he was foolish. However, I think he assessed his safety. I too would not have been able to ignore the little animal. Bravo I say, an example much needed in this iPhone, Me-generation world.

Good attitude and all that - but if he had been swept away??

I thought Australia was killing off kangaroos by the hundreds?

Yes, he could have been swept away and if that was the case then obviously he was foolhardy. But if he was a sensible bloke and a local, let's give him the benefit of the doubt and say he wasn't being a dickhead. Yes, in some areas there is a bastarding policy to cull kangas. But that doesn't mean we ALL feel like that!

Difficult one. I'd never put an animal above a human life - I know some people wouldn't agree with me though. However...when you see a life in danger, human or animal, you never know how you'd react.
I'm glad the man saved the little joey, but if he'd been swept away and drowned, Australia's tax payers would have had to provide for his five children presumably - an expensive joey then.
On the subject of culling, isn't this done in the animals' interests (in the same way as we cull deer - tough on the ones killed, but all for the common good, so to speak), or maybe I'm wrong, I don't know.

maybe I'm wrong, I don't know Forgive me if it offends, Ev, but I say for God's sake stand your ground. In my long and varied experience of women, it's rare to meet one who wouldn't be constantly saying stuff like "maybe I'm wrong, I don't know", when it was usually perfectly clear that they were right, but wouldn't admit it. I've been called worse than shite for allegedly putting some of the said women down, which could hardly have been further from the truth. I mean it, and that has been confirmed by a few of the alleged victims after the event. Am I ranting? I guess so, but it has been a cross I've had to bear for a long time -- strong, attractive, lovely women who yet put themselves down and transfer the blame to me -- me who never put a strong, attractive, lovely woman down in my life. Or any other woman for that matter. Sorry for the rant. I feel it in the deep heart's core. [With thanks to W.B. Yeats.]

Well, hush ma mouth. I blame it on Gone With The Wind.
Actually, I think you may have misunderstood me, Weyland. I meant that I might be wrong about the culling of kangaroos. I said "On the subject of culling, isn't this done in the animals' interests" but I should have said "kangaroos' interests". I don't know whether culling is done for the common good like it is with deer in this country, or whether it's done for sport and nothing else. I guess it probably IS done for the common good, but I truly don't know.
Mr. E. would probably put you straight. I constantly tell him I'm always right.

Sorry, Ev. I'm a broken record on this "putting down" thing. Kneejerk on account of history. That's my excuse. Mr Ev should think himself bloody lucky. Finis.

I've a feeling that the killing of kangaroos is done for human benefit, not theirs. They will insist on running across roads instead of using the zebra crossings, denting people's bumpers.
But Lily will I am sure enlighten us further.

Er, no, I won't!! No offence, honest, but I started this thread in gratitude at a joey being saved. So I am hardly likely to be the sort of person to a) know about or b) write about, the culling!

It is precisely because of this sort of horror that I am so delighted to see the story I posted. Darling little joey.

"Civilian marksmen contracted by the department began shooting the kangaroos on Tuesday night at the Majura training area" Interesting that the army has to hire marksmen. No doubt they bring their own rifles. Outsourcing gone mad.

It's a bit weird, really, cos I spend half my life going round with my eyes covered up and my hands over my ears going "ner ner ner" so I don't see or hear anything horrible about animals. I start this thread and now I am reluctant to read the replies because of how it has turned out!

I feel bad hearing about both; but with animals a horrible thing that happens is often a joke. And you also don't often hear about it: all the animals that must have got killed in the Aus floods, and they only get mentioned if they are livestock.
