In the interests of science, I have watched an episode of Larkrise -- the one where the little girl is abandoned by her family and the postman gets a poem, omg, I have fallen asleep just thinking of it.

Lark Rise? I remember my hubby Mike telling me it was the most boring book he'd ever been forced to read in his life.
As for Downton Abbey, watched the first episode tonight.
I do feel so sorry for that poor old Mr Bates though of course the horror and chaos of the war came through pretty well.

Oh, I loved Downton tonight! Sigh.... I'm half in love with Lady Mary AND the lovely Matthew Crawley.
This coming week will be going very slowly.

I loved the book of Lark Rise, and was really really disappointed by the TV version. I have a LP of music from a stage version by The Albion Band, and that's really good.
Not really seen Downton Abbey, though the bit I did see last night looked almost sepia, especially in the servants' rooms.

I liked Larkrise. I found it very relaxing. Me too. Effortless watching. (Never even heard of the book before the TV series.) Forced to read boring books? Tell me about it. The key is the word forced. I failed O-Level English Lit. because of The Mayor of Casterbridge. Just couldn't read it. Enjoy it every time it's on the radio. One day I'll read some Hardy, when the wound heals. Didn't watch Downton. Busy with other stuff. I guess there must be an ITV watch-again thingy, so I will watch it at some point. See it won an Emmy yesterday.

The problem with us stubbies is that we are so cool that we always wear our sunglasses, even when watching TV. That's why we generally prefer black and white movies such as Some Like It Hot.

What cruelty, that he should be engaged... and that bitch of a sister couldn't wait to tell Mary! I spent the first half missing Evil Thomas, the whole thing only came to life when he appeared in the trenches. I can't wait till he meets Evil New Housemaid. Match made in heaven. The costumes, though, Ev, not nearly as nice as last time.

I loved the Titanic fashions myself.

I watched in on itv iplayer and remembered why i have not really into the fuss of it all thats because it annoys me like Titanic and Upstairs downstairs. Its the hoity toity and the arrogant puffed up so called gentlemen class's and the being in ones place blooming class system that annoys me,the rush to go to that slaughter of a war just because of the Austrian Hungary empire taking revenge on Croats for the death of Arch Duke whats his face and the Russian's mobilized and we had this stupid agreement with France

Very well said Sesley. And nothing much has changed as I spied Fiona Bruce the other evening walking around the Buck Palace. You could land a plane on that staircase.
...and the lower classes depicted on screen from that era...Leonardo Dicaprio and Dick Van Dyke....not even British.

That can't all be down to Mr Bates being away, even if the butler claimed that they could barely function without him (I really don't see why, all he does he limp up and down to the Lord's bedroom and glare at people across the kitchen table). Do you think they giggle every time they say Mister Bates? I was relieved when Bates appeared not to be so martyish this series and then suddenly he spoiled it all by being more of a martyr than ever. Honest to God, he'd drive me mad!

Hah! Well, I've been worrying for a few weeks now and finally tonight my prediction came true - almost. poor old Matthew CrawleyNot quite the leg blown off, but - even worse - the wedding tackle won't now be in full working order, indeed in any working order! And William's croaked. It's his dad I feel for. I can't imagine how it's all going to end. I don't like the introduction of the new housemaid at this late stage either. I feel something strange is going to happen there. Trubbs? Any comments?

I'm a week behind. That's how it is in Ireland; it's the recession. I've just watched the croaking episode so I won't be reading this thread until next week! I used to quite fancy William's dad when I was a little girl. (That's odd, isn't it). He was in some kids TV programme. Anyway..er.. yes.. Poor Daisy, by the way, how bullied was she? It's not far from prostitution. The new maid is not a good thing - I hadn't really got to grips with the other new maid yet & I'd thought she would be a pal for Thomas so I'm surprised that she's in a hovel scrubbing floors. But wait, speaking of Thomas, what is his relationship with O'Brien? And why oh why oh why does she suddenly care about m'lady so much? I think something important happened in the first series and I missed it? I'm finding it all a bit difficult to follow. They skip too much of some stories and linger too much on others. <<Cross face smiley.>>

There was more weeping by maidens over that damned wedding tackle than there was over either of his legs. Shocking.

(Do you think his wedding tackle incident had anything to do with the Curse of Mary? And should Sir Richard be worried about his own future and woe betide any man that she looks upon sort of thing?)
