Putting the like or dislike of Ricky Gervais to one side... You're all way off. You're ridiculously out of touch - & I say that because you all use the internet. Surely you have noticed the complete breakdown of social norms that is rife around here? Words such as ''retarded'' had been sternly marched out of general conversation in real life but not on the web - in internetland they made a comeback stronger than ever. We - of all people - should understand that these words become desensitized and changed faster than you can type Jack Robinson and press send. Mong? Mong is just short for Mongtard. When I was at school we said spa. And knacker. I still do (force of habit). (Knacker is the equivalent of the N word now when speaking of Travellers). I recall a friend's mother trying to guilt trip us out of saying 'spa'. We argued with her that it may have once been offensive to people who were medically labelled as spastics but it now had a new and better and completely different meaning which was..er.. spa.. a cooler and funnier way to say idiot. Of course, technically we were wrong and she was right. But it made complete sense to us at the time. I tried to prevent my daughter from using ''gay'' in its new sense of ''stupid'' but to no avail. She witheringly explained to me that it had no link to the homosexual term 'gay' & so on and etc and ever repeating circles. So Ricky Gervais got caught in one of those word swaps. So what?!! He didn't make it up. People will still say mongtard when this is all over. I advise reading some of his blog entries and tweets. www.rickygervais.com/thissideofthetruth.phpP.S. Ricky Gervais didn't do this as a publicity stunt. How do I know? Cos he doesn't need the publicity.

And that one in the Observer is a dodo too. She thinks that Warwick Davis spent something like a year or whatever it was making a series where everyone is encouraged to laugh at him in a cruel and mocking manner, does she? Maybe she'd prefer it if nasty old Ricky Gervais would withdraw his evil programme and let 'dwarves' get on with what they are good at - panto in Milton Keynes, their names billed well below Suzanne Shaw... The Office was wonderful. Extras was exquisite. No reason to think that this comedy will suddenly depart vastly from the usual send up of ourselves.

Go Trubbs!!
Looks like we will have to start a separate thread on "Life's Too Short" where it will be just the two of us posting. ;D
The Office was excellent. The David Brent character was so wonderfully dreadful it made me cry with laughter. Maybe that's just my sense of humour.
Extras, to me, was even better. I loved the way Ashley Jensen as the Maggie character would get herself into awkward situations, saying all the wrong things, trying to extricate herself. I wish they would repeat the series.
There! I've said it. I've outed myself as a Ricky Gervais fan. Trubbs, there's nothing for it. We must elope.

Agree to disagree.
Can't stand Gervais or any of his shows. Same with David Jason (though he was good on radio). Don't like AbFab much either, except Dorcas and June.
Funniest people of the moment? Bill Bailey and John Bishop. Bill doesn't even need to draw breath to be hilarious.

He does need the publicity and like most celebs is using Twitter to that end...All D minus celebs are told to use Twitter. And I can assure you that Gervais is using the word 'mong' knowing full well the consequences. Which is why he's on Twitter and using the word 'mong'. This is a man who has the media in his pocket. Perhaps he's a got a new series coming out? Perhaps he's just bored? But he knows exactly what 'mong' means..,.and he now understands how Twitter works...and he constantly yearns publicity. No matter how much it is needed.

And Billy Connolly made a joke about wishing they'd hurry up and kill Ken Bigley cos we were all getting bored of it because back then Twitter hadn't been invented and the only publicity he could pull in was a crass shock tactic. Yeah right.
Gervais has a new series about to come out - of course he is publicising that - but cynically working the use of the word mong into his blog posts to do so? A bit unbelievable. The man's just made a faux pas - that's his style.
He has An idiot Abroad currently on Sky and syndicated around the world, his own show currently on one of the American networks, a Channel 4 animated show currently showing, a new BBC show, The Office (American) constantly showing, feature films, plus plus plus plus... he's a huge success, he's producing all his own stuff, he's wading knee deep in awards; he really doesn't need to bet it all on ''mong''.
Big mouth eejit, yes. Yes. But he's apologised. So... you know.... yesterday's news.

I was taking a masters degree at Birkbeck College London a few years back. As I was walking downstairs, Gervais was walking up (presumably to the bar - university of London alumni privilages) with a very young blonde floozie on his arm, who was evidently eating out of his hands. As we passed, Gervais had a look at me and then made a snide comment to his bird, at which she naturally became hysterical with laughter. I guess it's a rare privilage to be the butt of a famous comedian's joke, but sometimes I do wish I had just laid him out there right then.
Again Trubble I argue, Gervais knows exactly what he's doing...an apology is worthless...the man is scum. And talentless. Sorry.

Les Dennis always was a bit of a moaner. I think his attitude at first was roll his eyes and poke the mental people who bothered to register their disgust on his twitter feed... I said mental. .... and that's just him. I think calling him scum is pretty OTT. As for him having no talent.... You funny.

Not sure that I do particularly like him. He's a prat and a genius in equal measure. Most people are just prats so he's ahead of the game on that score. He produces some achingly good stuff though. Not everyone will like all of it. Mong isn't one of his better jokes. (But it was quite funny when in response to hatemail he tweeted ''good monging" and "you munges" just to make a point.)

and Trubble... was Ken Bigley suffering from Downs Syndrome\? Not fair to pull Billy Connolly into this. WHAT? It's exactly the same. Ken Bigley could no more help his situation than people with Downs Syndrome can help theirs. I love Billy Connolly - but I remember reading a quote from him that you can make jokes about anything. I googled it and, obviously, came up first of all with a quote from the Daily Mail. However, I searched around a bit, knowing how suspicious most of you are about the veracity of the Daily Mail, and came up with a BBC piece instead: news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/1489361.stm(They probably got it from the Daily Mail anyway ;D) I have a feeling that Billy Connolly might support Ricky Gervais.
