Well, we're all very excited here. We beat Colchester, which is the main thing. They're getting all out of their pram about it, as are Milton Keynes (pah!)
Look, Chelmsford is the birthplace of radio and the county town of Essex - we should have had city status before now really. In fact our football team has been called Chelmsford City for I don't know how long.
Anyhow, it's very nice to be chosen.

Don't you have to have a cathedral and a bishop to be a city?

Nah. Just the endorsement of the Queen, I think.
(There are places with cathedrals that aren't cities. Don't ask me which, though.)

Don't you have to have a cathedral and a bishop to be a city? And how would that work for the parts of the UK where the Church of England's writ doesn't run, and the established church has no bishops in it?

Someone should have seen that coming...

Someone should have seen that coming... In my experience, the English think the default position of everything is what is normal to them. Which is cool if it comes to things like GMT. But it's shit when it comes to anything politically or culturally different.

But Chelmsford is in England, Riot. You Scots can do as you please.
Well, you will anyway, without my blessing.

Trubbs, I must confess I'm a bit miffed that I didn't receive a personal call from Her Maj.

As I said elsewhere - Congratulations on another excuse to have your council tax put up! To pay for all those new road signs. Apparently Derby Peeps were bloody annoyed when the council came up with excuse after excuse to charge people for extra stuff after gaining City Status.

Off topicish - what's your town twinned with?

My hometown (and the place of my birth) is twinned with Brest, France and Ynys Mon (Anglesey), Wales. The welsh one makes some sense as it's just across the water and businesses can work together, but I dunno how we got anyone in France to join up with us.
Our Council has "signed a friendship agreement" with Izumo, Japan.
I think that means that we are no longer at war with them - phew!

Like twinned-with signs? Off topicish - what's your town twinned with? I have absolutely no idea! My old stomping ground, Tunbridge Wells, used to be twinned with Wiesbaden, although I think I read somewhere that they'd recently broken this off - as under the current circumstances it wasn't worth keeping it going. Or maybe they've declared war on them or something!
