www.roalddahlfans.com/books/revorecipe1.phpI'm not kidding, that is the best chocolate cake...ever. Just read the ingredients for the icing to know: melted chocolate and cream - that's it. It's Bruce Bogtrotter's Cake from Roald Dahl's 'Matilida'. He's the poor kid who has to eat the whole cake infront of school assembly as a punishment from the evil headmistress. When you make the cake you'll understand the punishment. One small slice is enough chocolate for anyone- delicious but too too chocolately to eat more than a slice. I bet you didn't think that was possible. Gary Rhodes wrote a cookbook of Dahl recipes, all sorts of Willy Wonka treats, Mr Twit's Beard, Frobscuttle juice etc and Mini-Trub and I used to make them for fun. It's easy to look back on those days with rose tinted glasses. I'm feeling all nostalgic now. Brilliant book.

That sounds like a chocolate brownie recipe with Chocolate truffle mixture on top. God, my mouth is watering so much. Exit everso with lined cake tin and saucepan in hand. On second thoughts, I'm supposed to be on a diet. Bugger.

I take a lot of persuading to eat anything coffee flavoured.
Espresso = good
Cake = good
Together = ruination of both.

Arf?
What do we say about coffee cake? Is it in our manifesto?

Aah! Coffee Revels! You bite into it and think "Damn - not another orange one!" Then the glorious coffee flavour leaks across your tongue.
.......and there's only ever one in each pack!
I don't use espresso in my C/W cake I just mix enough (usually Percol) instant to give it a nice subtle flavour. (I know - strong dilution of coffee = same thing) I don't think it is, in this case, somehow!

Rum and whisky put into coffee complements the coffee.
Chocolate fights with it.
And vice versa vis a vis the cake situ.

I've made the chocolate cake. Man, it smells fantastic. I have fresh raspberries and double cream to serve with it. It contains 2 whole bars of plain chocolate PLUS cocoa powder, 5 eggs and 200 grammes (whatever they are) of butter, sugar and ground almonds. BUT no flour, so it won't be fattening. If anyone wants the full recipe let me know.

oh please i love new recipes to try. Sesley, I'll let you have the recipe once I've tried it (only about two hours to go!) The excitement is mounting. The grandchildren are round at the mo and have already spotted and had some of the raspberries, so I've had to hide them. They haven't seen the chocolate cake yet though.

I made a Victoria sponge this morning... Mr Plum has eaten almost half of it already! Tip from my late Ma (a professional cook) - weigh the 3 eggs and use that weight for the rest of the ingredients rather than the usual 6oz or whatever. Perfect every time.

Didn't know that Mrs Plum I don't do much baking as I'm the one that eats most of it. But my eldest made me a lovely sponge cake at 1am so I could have some this morning, bless. He makes far better sponges than I do.
