This was briefly debated in the Friday Chat Room (prior to an in-depth discussion on post Communist countries)

i dont mind a bit of jelly- hell, why some nites i positevely encourage it! but aint there somethink in trifle thats a bit gritty n biscuit-ey or somethink? i hjave a vague recollection of some type of layer of cat litter being involved in the construction of the trifle, and that my friends was the bit i objected to. little gritty crunchy bits. but now i think about it blamance (sp) was a bit suspect as well, i mean what exactly IS it? ITS somethink masquerading as somethink else no doubt.. all custardy n creamy n weird.. the jelly was the only bit you could trust, when it came down to it. if you was in a sticky situation and you had to count on one of the components of a trifle to help you out when thnigs got a bit sketchy, i'd put my faith in the jelly, qwuite frankly.

No. No. No.
A proper English trifle has no jelly.
Sponge cake (with or without some jam on it) soaked in sherry, some fruit (optional) like raspberries or thinly sliced fresh peaches, topped with real custard, not the stuff out of a tin or packet. Then some thick cream. That's all you need.

I couldn't possibly eat a trifle with no jelly! Sponge, jelly and sherry, (fruit optional), then custard, then cream, and if you wish I will allow grated chocolate or sprinkles on top. Perfect.

Birds Trifle (in a box) for me - strawberry of course. A triumph of the modern age. Perfection in a packet.

Trubs is right. Trifle doesn't have jelly. However, I believe there are ready-made desserts which are (wrongly) called trifle that have a sort of jelly in them. Bleurgh. So, ya boo.
