www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009/mar/30/madonna-malawi-adopt-girl1Madonna, the 50 year old woman (who would, therefore, be too old to adopt in most countries) is in Malawi picking out a nice-looking one to match the one she already has. Local do-gooders claim it is better for children to stay in their extended families, and the chosen child's Gran is not happy about her proposed adoption. However, surely a life and education paid for by Madonna is better than the child staying in an orphanage?

That's what I think and I've been pondering it all day.
I don't know how much contact Mercy has with her family, of course, but if my grand daughter stood the chance of going to live with Madonna or hanging around an orphanage with me visiting her every now and again, I'd choose Madonna.

But then again, at the weekend I was reading that book about Madonna by her brother Christopher that someone loaned me . . and she really is a pretty nasty person. (Madonna is.)
She doesn't seem very nice. Total control freak. Tight with her money. etc.

but they live with Madonnas nannies not her, when did she wipe a runny nose and get up at 2 in the morning for a child that was vomiiting in its bed? its good she has the money to give them a good life, but these celebs do this shopping for a orphan child as one shops for a handbag, her and Angeli Jolie seem to use thse children to big up their egos.

Sesley, I don't know that I've ever read anything about Madonna's mothering style, so I'm loathe to agree with you without any evidence. Maybe she is the way you describe, in which case this adoption is nothing but PR and is despicable, notwithstanding the fact that a young girl will get a chance in life she otherwise wouldn't. But I must defend the mighty Angelina Jolie. True, her 'league of nations' adoption and breeding strategy seems a little overwhelming numerically (is it 6 kids she's up to now?), but all the evidence is that she and Brad provide really hands-on parenting, and are genuinely trying to give those kids a good - if Bohemian - upbringing.

Madonna is too old to be bringing up children.

I'd still vote for Madonna's nanny to look after my kid.

She's just appealing to her fan base. All the teenage white girls in inner cities have black babies.

there has to be more to being a parent than being able to provide material things, they need to be inspiring and encouraging, this little girl will be taken from its familiar homeland and put into a palace with the care of a nanny's who will be caring hopefully and understanding, but what about the emotional support, how much hands on parenting does Madonna give to her children, i think may be Angeline and Brad maybe great parents, but will they all provide the emotional support which is so important to all their children so that they don't end up like Bob Geldoffs daughters high on drugs and drinking themselves into oblivion because the people that are supposed to care for them aren't around when they are needed.

why not? he hasn't saved Africa, they are still starving and dying, his efforts good but unfortuately not his fault not enough, meanwhile his daughters are attention seeking,so my thought is will Madonnas and Mrs Pitt and possibly end up doing the same. will be interesting to see how things develop. you know children need love and support in their infromative years more than money, someone to guide them in the to make the right choices in life and protect them from the big bad world while they are so vunerable not let out to run wild looking for attention and love from outside home because home was unable to give it to them. thats what being a parent is about,so is a dysfunctional popstar suitable for adopting another child from a different background, apart from plenty of oppertunites she can give them from her wealth what about the real parenting stuff people like you and me can give to our children without the wealth,is Madonna just shopping for another accessory?
