How long's a piece of string? I think we have to be clear to these countries what is expected of them firstly. Then the argument has to be made to the citizens of the EU too, something that should perhaps go to a referendum in the end. We can only really go ahead when everyone is happy with the idea. There will always be some who resist expansion - many with good reason, like myself. But if a compelling case can be made that expansion will benefit the EU and that it can be achieved affordably and with minimal disruption to society - then I could be persuaded. I do feel though that if a country genuinely reforms it will reach a point where, when the doors are opened, the majority of citizens stay where they are. That's what we should be aiming for. For a situation where a country gets admitted and nobody really notices. Firstly, it can't and won't go to referendum unless the self-amending part of the Lisbon Treaty is thrown out. Secondly, if you're against expansion why are you thinking of a timescale - isn't that just a sneaky way to stop expanasion on your watch? - or are you just for a moritorium on expanding at all until, say, global economic recovery? I ask these questions so you can rehearse for Question Time.

That's a Westminster issue ;D ;D ;D I do think that when they do up the VAT rate though (and here's a prediction - In order to spin it as a good move - some pointer will be made about being in line with the rest of Europe blah blah - as if we needed it to be sold to us!

Ah! That would explain the renewed call for votes!
I see there's a chap somewhere in the North West with 400 odd!
Perhaps he's got a big family. ;D

I tell you - she's a smart cookie. Just finished her 4th year, her dissertation was on the campaign methods used to recruit child soldiers in Chad. I talked to her for about an hour and she's as smart as a tack.

I see we have the second or third lowest rate of VAT in Europe. (when at 17.5%) I wonder if that's going to be the first thing that will get played with when the down turn, turns up. The average rate now seems to be about 19%. It'll be a killer but I wouldn't put it past them to do a phased rise to 19% after next year's return to normal. After all - it went from 15 to 17.5 purely to get the Tories out of their mess.Pat When are you meaning ?

We have a somewhat higher VAT over here. It is something like 22% for luxury goods (DVDs, for instance). There is a sliding scale so it is a bit less on food, but on average still higher than the UK. As far as I know, Denmark has the highest VAT rate in Europe

Right guys, I'm running 2nd at the moment. Voting closes on Fri at midnight. I think I'm in with a fair chance of being a candidate. I really need to finish first to stand a chance of election though.
But, I've got a few ideas for online activity and I'd like to ask for volunteers to join the "online team". Contact me by pm if you're interested.
Vote for a Stubby ;D
