HDMI leads are the new thing. Most TV's & DVD's come with the ability to connect with these things...far neater than scarts (which in fairness, gave far better results than DIN's and the like). All the connection points on my TV point down instead of just protruding out of the back...which is pretty sensible when a TV is designed to be wall mounted. AH

What I was thinking is that we have or we had the technology available for a smaller version of a scart plug when the scart plug came out! I was astonished when I saw how clumsy these things were. I have a feeling that some company got the manufacturers in a headlock over it "Use our plug sockets or else!" There's something very fishy about it to me All the connection points on my TV point down instead of just protruding out of the back...which is pretty sensible when a TV is designed to be wall mounted. AH As it should be! I have honestly though, seen some of the new ones with all the sockets at the side! Not only did it look odd - but the very weight of them made the thing lopsided!

I remember that a scart lead was essential for playing non-UK Playstation games on older TV's when the PS1 came out, something to do with the PAL/NTSC conversion. I'm pretty certain that they were required for proper 5:1 surround sound as well.
Most modern TV's & DVD's are able to play/produce any format now.

AH SCART is able to carry a variety of formats, and the reason why you needed to use it for an import PS2 is because you needed to use RGB (which is the best quality output you can get from a SCART connection) which removed the need for TVs to be NTSC (US format) compatible. SCART can only carry stereo sound (which can be converted to Pro Logic 2 surround sound format if you have an amp that supports it), but for true surround sound (e.g. 5.1) you need a digital connection (that small square one). SCART can carry composite, s-video or rgb (plus the sound). The reason why it is so big is so that it has the pins for all those formats as well as some switching pins. It is useful because it is a catch all solution and so is pretty user friendly.

Most tech seems to be subject to "Moores Law" in one way or another.
Plasmas were silly prices a decade ago, several thousand quid for a basic, small one, you can get a nice 50" for under a grand now.

Here is a photo of the new TV. Isn't it big? To judge size, see box of yoga cards on shelf beneath, polish optimistically perched on top of mantel, or litte ornamental Viennese horse thing on lower mantel.

And HERE is the new handbag. We compromised on £65 in the end (on my Debenham's card, so I'm not quite sure how I'm benefitting) and it's a lovely soft leather Fiorelli number. Let's see if the straps hold for any longer than on my usual £8 Primark jobs. I carry such a lot of crap around, metaphorically and literally.

We'll dust when we've worked out whether there are any gender-based assumptions inherent within discussions about dusting. Until then, it's stalemate. The fingerprints stay. (I'm keeping my new bag very clean however Apha, and that's what's important.)

That telly looks pretty cool <jealous> Well, things are tight in the SWL household. Mrs SWL has had pneumonia since before Xmas and is on SSP so there's only effectively one wage coming in. For Mother's Day I couldn't afford to get her a new handbag (like I know she wants), but I did get her a new purse.

S'funny - as I've mentioned - we've got that stand - and I always thought that if we bought one of those telly's it would keep falling down the gaps!
